Abstract
A major challenge in managing Iranian cities that host the shrines of the Imams (AS) or Imamzadehs is determining whether such cities should be characterized as pilgrimage destinations or as religious tourism destinations—and whether their visitors should be regarded as pilgrims or religious tourists. This debate arises from the fact that the concepts of pilgrimage and religious tourism have not been clearly defined, their characteristics remain insufficiently specified, and contradictions exist among the definitions currently in use. The dichotomy between pilgrimage and religious tourism is important for adopting either perspective leads to divergent approaches in the planning and management of these cities. The emergence of this challenge is rooted in the ambiguous conceptualization of both pilgrimage and religious tourism.  This article first reviews the origins of the term religious tourism in Western literature and the needs it was intended to address. Meta-synthesis is a qualitative research method used to analyze and interpret conflicting findings across previous studies on a particular topic, thereby generating an integrated and novel understanding. Through this method, the results of diverse studies are systematically explored and synthesized to form a new conceptual framework.  The findings indicate that eight attributes can be identified for the concepts of pilgrimage and religious tourism: travel destination, traveler motivation, traveler identity, type of travel, host community attitude, travel impacts, the leisure and recreation inherent to travels, and management approach. These attributes exhibit distinct manifestations in pilgrimage and religious tourism, accounting for both their similarities and differences. The research questions were addressed separately for Persian and English sources.
