Abstract

Abstract

Urban entrances, as the first levels of visual contact and encounter, play a vital role in the formation of a mental image of the city. These transitional spaces that define the boundary between the natural environment outside the city and the artificial space inside it. The entrance is actually a showcase of the identity and personality of a city. This research was conducted with the aim of evaluating the quality of entrances to the city of Shirvan from the perspective of citizens and travelers. Two documentary and field methods were used to collect the required data. In the documentary section, by referring to books, articles, theses, reports, research plans and statistics, the necessary information for developing theoretical foundations and research background has been provided. Also, in order to identify physical and visual characteristics and collect opinions of travelers and visitors, a field method including observation and questionnaires has been used. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including the comparison of means test, and using SPSS software. Seven variables were examined in this study, including: interesting and attractive elements and sights, annoying elements, respondents' feelings upon entering the city, and physical features, acceptability, readability, and individuality. With a random sampling of 350 people, the quality of the Mashhad entrance was evaluated significantly higher than the Bojnourd-Shirvan entrance. The Mashhad-Shirvan entrance was evaluated above average in all dimensions, and the Bojnourd-Shirvan entrance, except for readability and acceptability, was evaluated below average. The presence of inappropriate uses such as car repair shops and nuisance industries, along with a lack of welfare services and irregular advertising boards, are among the main challenges at the entrances to Shirvan.
