Abstract
The Makran coast in southeastern Iran, long regarded as a remote periphery, has emerged as a focal point for the strategic utilization of coastal capacities to strengthen Iran’s strategic depth amid recent geopolitical transformations and the emergence of new transit and energy corridors. Accordingly, this article analyzes the strategic utilization of these capacities in strengthening the strategic depth of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In this study, data were collected through library research and analyzed using a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings indicate that the strategic utilization of the capacities of the Makran coastal region across three dimensions—geopolitical, geoeconomic, and military-security—can contribute to strengthening the strategic depth of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In the geopolitical dimension, enhancing Makran’s role in maritime and regional linkages, strengthening Iran’s access to open waters, and expanding regional interactions contribute to increasing the country’s strategic maneuverability and influence. In the geoeconomic dimension, the development of port, logistical, and corridor infrastructure, the expansion of the maritime economy and associated value chains, and the diversification of energy infrastructure, while strengthening Iran’s position within regional and international economic and transit networks, contribute to the establishment of economic linkages and enhanced strategic resilience. In the military and security dimension, creating a strategic balance against threats and enhancing maritime presence function as a “strategic cover,” significantly increasing Iran’s capacity for maneuver and resilience in the face of external threats. Overall, Iran’s strategic depth in the Makran context results from the synergy among geopolitical, geoeconomic, and military-security capacities. Accordingly, through the strategic utilization of these capacities, Makran can contribute to the development and strengthening of Iran’s strategic depth by expanding the country’s geopolitical space for action, enhancing its geoeconomic power and resilience, and relocating part of Iran’s defense and deterrence capabilities to a more distant maritime environment.
