Abstract

Aims: The purpose of this research was to prioritize the strategies for realization of night city with an emphasis on intra-urban transport in Mashhad metropolis.

Method: Descriptive-analytical research method was used for the present study. The data were collected by using questionnaire completed by 40 managers and experts specialized in intra-urban transport based on Delphi method. Then, the obtained strategies were evaluated and prioritized by using SWOT and ANP models in Super Decision software.

Results: Firstly, the current status of public transportation of Mashhad metropolis and the access radius of each of them were identified on the map using Arc GIS software, and then their internal (strength and weakness) and external (opportunity and threat) points were determined. Finally, using these points in network analysis model, intra-urban transportation strategies were identified in order to realize nigh city. The most important strategies were: WO2 strategy: Increasing public transport services (metro and bus) at some hours of the night, WO1 strategy: Prohibition of private cars up to 1-km radius of Razavi Holy Shrine, WO3 strategy: Development and renovation of paths special for hiking from Holy Shrine to the surrounding commercial and recreational centers, and ST2 strategy: Providing the pilgrims and tourists with optimal urban services during 24 hours.

Conclusion: The obtained results indicate that there are serious weaknesses and disabilities in the realization of night city in Mashhad city, but presenting executive solutions such as providing security and nightly facilities for pilgrims and people living adjacent and correct planning not only minimize the weaknesses but they also provide the possibility of using environmental opportunities for the realization of nigh city in the city.
