Abstract

In the attitude and studies of political geographers, the conditions and features of the geographical environment always have a bearing on individual and social traits (national characteristics), governance methods, governmental structure, national power and security, and cultural and economic structures, among other things (cautions should be exercised against a deterministic interpretation of these facts). In reality, the geographical environment can simultaneously pave the way for opportunities and threats, security and insecurity. In this regard, the natural and geographical environment of Iran has been home to both opportunities and threats for ages due to its special geographical location. As such, this research seeks to investigate the effect of geographical factors in the Iranian plateau on the insecure historical/political and social life of Iranian people. This is descriptive-analytical research in nature and data were collected using document analysis and library study. The results show that the experiences of living in an eventful and turbulent geographical milieu have influenced the historical/political and social lives of Iranians. More precisely, the quantity and quality of the historical/political and social developments of Iranians (emerging as long periods of anarchy and turbulent history of the ruling governments in the plateau, the type of governance and statecraft, national characteristics, endurance of autarchy, etc.), can be largely influenced by the geographical criteria such as location, climatic conditions, the effect of unevenness and the natural insecurity of the Iranian plateau. In conclusion, the research provides some solutions.
