Analysis of the Effects of Rural Farmers’ Actions on Drought Hazard Management and Adaptation (Case Study: Kakhk Rural District, Gonabad County)

Abstract

Drought is one of the hazards that directly affects the lives of rural people. Accordingly, the present study aims to investigate the level of farmers' perception of drought, to identify the measures taken by rural people in managing and coping with drought, and to measure the impact of these measures on the adaptation of these communities to drought hazard in the villages of Kakhk rural district. This study has a descriptive-analytical design and data collection was conducted using the survey method. First, the research indicators and variables were extracted to design the research tool, i.e., the questionnaire. In the survey phase, the data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire. The statistical population includes 197 farmers from the Kakhk rural district. According to the results, on average, the variable of farmers' perception of drought, as well as farmers’ measures in economic-livelihood, socio-behavioral, infrastructural and agricultural-exploitation areas, is lower than the median (3) and therefore below average. This indicates the limited and faint role of these measures in coping with drought. The economic variable has the highest average (2.42), wielding the highest impact in drought coping. The evaluation of the adaptation variable suggests that farmers' adaptation is above average. The results of the regression test on evaluating the impact of these measures on the adaptation variable show that these measures explain about 50% of the variance in the adaptation variable, and the model fit is fairly high.
