Performance Evaluation of Bicycle-Urban Bus Combined System and Presenting Integration Strategies with QSPM Model (Case Study: Mashhad)

Abstract

Urban development and population growth have been linked to a significant surge in daily intra-city travel, giving rise to a plethora of adverse consequences. An integrated transportation system, as one of the key components of smart growth, can contribute to the development of sustainable transportation by linking the existing infrastructure and boosting the efficiency and appeal of the entire system. This study investigates the community of bike-sharing (bydoo) users and the urban bus system through the correlation method to integrate the above systems. Accordingly, 384 questionnaires were distributed among users of both systems in 9 areas that were in the vicinity of bus stations and terminals hub. Pearson correlation test and ordinal logistic regression model were also used to investigate the significant relationship between items and the impact intensity of variables. The SWOT technique is employed to determine opportunities and threats of the above combined system. Drawing on the views of a group of 20 experts, the coefficient of importance for internal and external factors and the type of strategies are identified. In the next step, the QSPM method is adopted to evaluate and prioritize strategies based on the appeal of the system. According to the results, high (11.2%), medium (19.3%) and low (69.5%) usage frequency of the combined system was determined. The correlation coefficient of factors such as car ownership (-0.471), cycling distance (-0.369), travel time (-0.338), education (-0.316) and income (-0.294) were inversely related to usage frequency of the combined system. Moreover, bicycle paths with a correlation coefficient of 0.439 have a direct effect on the usage frequency. Finally, some of the main strategies to improve the combined system are as follows: building more shared bicycle stations, designing more bike parking in the bus terminals and main stations, creating specific bicycle paths and providing conditions for transportation of bikes with special racks mounted on buses.
