Evaluating the Impact of Climate Change on Flood Characteristics in Western Iran Under Future Climatic Conditions

Abstract
Climate change, a major environmental challenge in recent decades, has significantly impacted water resources and increased the frequency of hydro-climatic events like floods. This research aims to evaluate the effects of climate change on flood indicators (return probability, intensity, and duration) in the Dez basin over the coming decades. Additionally, climate change analysis, uncertainty assessment, and the application of bias correction methods as other phased research goals intended for risk management improvement. In this paper, we analyzed temperature and precipitation data from five climate models derived from two databases, CORDEX-WAS and 2W2E. The HadGEM2-ES and MIROC5 models were selected to simulate three 20-year periods under three different scenarios. After calibrating the SWAT model for daily flow simulation, micro-flow data were incorporated to predict future flow, and flood-related indices were calculated. Overall, the results suggest declining precipitation and rising temperature compared to the observation period. Further, the 2W2E database predicted a greater drop in precipitation and a higher temperature surge for both models compared to the CORDEX-WAS database. The indicators of flood recurrence probability and intervals took a downturn in both databases. However, the flood magnitude index in CORDEX-WAS showed an upturn despite the declining precipitation, indicating the higher probability of extreme events induced by climate change. This research reveals that future climate change is likely to reduce the probability and intervals of flood events, although the magnitude of floods may increase under specific conditions. These findings underscore the need for effective planning and adoption of flood risk management strategies to address the varied impacts of climate change.
