Abstract

Tourism offers an approach that can help develop rural areas with various climatic conditions. Semi-arid rural areas are a prime example of areas with special tourism resources. Therefore, exploring the status of tourism indicators in such villages and analyzing their obstacles and potentials represent key measures for ensuring proper understanding and planning. In this study, this goal has been stressed in the rural areas of Abadeh County. The research method is descriptive-analytical and data collection was conducted through a survey. The statistical population of the study consists of rural residents, and considering the limitations of the study, a sample size of n=372 people was determined using the Cochran formula. The questionnaire validity was confirmed by elites and its reliability was also approved by filling out 30 questionnaires and calculating the results with a Cronbach coefficient of above 0.70. According to the results, the status of rural tourism indicators was assessed below 0.05 with a mean of 199.3. The optimal status was observed in two indicators: rural hospitality (3.879) and the cost of accommodation and visiting the village (3.847). Also, the result of Friedman's test showed that the main challenges were related to poor tourism services and infrastructure with a mean of 9.91 and the lack of government support for local-indigenous rural products with a mean of 9.38. The most important potentials included attracting investment from the private sector with a mean of 11.60 and the suitable geographical location of villages with a mean of 10.86. Overall, the analysis of the results indicates that the tourism approach can contribute to sustainable rural development because the capacities and potentials of tourism can help diversify the economy of semi-arid rural areas. It is suggested to mitigate the weaknesses and challenges based on the existing capacities and resources.
