Abstract
Desirable policy-making and planning for rural tourism destinations requires understanding and evaluating the status quo. In this paper, the tourism development in the villages of the Oraman, Kurdistan province and its contribution to employment generation is explored and then, by evaluating the status of employment tourism in this rural area, the relationship between these two variables is analyzed based on the dominant tourism contexts. The statistical population consisted of the residents of 30 villages in Sarvabad and Kamyaran counties. The "rural tourism development" was measured at the rural level by designing a comprehensive worksheet. The data on major public infrastructure and tourism facilities, types of attractions and tangible and intangible heritage, tourism products, and events in the studied villages were collected through interviews with local managers. By selecting a sample of n=300 people, the "rural tourism employment" dimensions were also measured at the level of individuals by designing and validating another questionnaire, which was then summarized at the rural level to be compared with the variable of "rural tourism development". Villages with cultural heritage and natural attractions gained higher scores that were statistically significant. Other villages formed a relatively homogeneous group that was deprived of tourism development and job creation. There was a significant positive correlation (more than 67 percent) between tourism development and tourism job creation, especially in villages that had both cultural-historical and natural attractions, and were in a favorable situation with respect to both variables. Therefore, with calculated and visionary strategic planning and organizational support, the valuable cultural and historical heritage of the Oraman, through the rural tourism mechanism, can also have a sustainable impact on the economy and livelihoods of the local people in addition to their ethnic identity.
